Are Protection Paladins OP?

In PVE? Remember when I mentioned playing my paladin a couple weeks ago and thought retribution felt a bit clunky? That was actually their off-spec, my paladin's main spec was actually protection, and it was through tanking that she actually got up to the mid level 50s.

I decided to try out the "new" cata protection, worked hard to sort through all the holy righteous items in my spellbook and organized them according to how I think I would push my buttons in a general pull and started queuing as tank.

HOLY CRAP! From what I see, protection paladins do not die even more now! With this new Holy Power mechanic and Word of Glory self heals, my paladin could solo almost the entire lower blackrock spire save for the trolls that hex you into a frog then chop you into iddy biddy bits. Heck we could probably solo any dungeon at level? Which is kinda scary and sad.

Threat was almost never an issue, with hammer of the righteous being a nice guaranteed AOE along with our shield throw and holy wrath I levelled this paladin all the way to outlands and she is already 64! I was tanking the outlands instances half-afk while watching Mad Men with wow in the background.

From the 28934302 or so dungeons I tanked only two people had beat me in damage. The AOE damage generation is disgusting. (And I am proud to say one of them was a demo lock, and the other was a DK who was EIGHT levels above everyone else)

It was fun tanking, but in the back of my mind there spawned a slight sadness, this would all end soon, the Wrath Style run in and pull everything, once Truby hits 85 with a gear level of 329 it'll all be down to careful pulls, sticking to crusader strike and hammer bash.

tl;dr: Truny says "I think protection paladins are kinda fun because I can smash buttons randomly and be a useful tank while levelling really fast".

Priesty Pally Progress

Husbrus the Priest. My 10th toon on my main account, grossly underused.

I had manually levelled her up to 16 and started questing ALL the quests in The Barrens with a friend. It was quite enjoyable duo-ing these quests and travelling the dry and barren land that is The Barrens.

We killed and killed and occasionally queued in LFG (both as a healer) and BAM BAM we did some RFC, Shadowfang Keep and OH MY GOD Wailing Caverns.

I healed each time as a Shadow Priest.

I'd have to say Power Word: Shield is my best friend. And learning Flash Heal at level 18 (I think) is a godsend. Healing at low levels is a real mana drain! Well, anything is a mana drain when I'm used to having Life Tap or Unlimited Resto Druid Mana.

I might just respec Husbrus the Priest to Holy/Discipline and heal my way through to 80 since Shadow DPS doesn't feel like my cup of tea at the moment.

Mind Blast, Dot'em Up, Purple Laser. It didn't feel very impactful or painful. We'll see. I will probably avoid my Priest for a bit unless I'm bored. At least she got up to level 23!

Truby the Paladin: Tanker and Retlol'er

Oh Paladin! I made a Paladin JUST so that I could see what all those weird and wacky shiny abilities they used were called and what they did!

Truby Ret DPS and Ret Tanked her way to level 40 and ran to her Trainer to receive Dual Specialization and became a Tank again. (She was Prot, but it was too slow, then changed to Ret...then patch 3.3 came and tanking=groups)

Ret DPS is ....pretty strong for this level consitently pulling 200 dps just by spamming buttons and relying on consecrate. Seal of Command does the rest.

And yes, those are the only abilities I understand and or remember the name to.

If I wanted that 50% reduction shield I know its "9" on my key bindings but I am not sure what its called. Also I can't find my Pally Bubble, what is THAT skill called? Do I even HAVE it? I remember using it once....and it was NOT called Pally Bubble! I can't find it anymore!

What's with all our Hands? And laying hands on friend and foe alike? Jeez!

And all those Seals and Judgements!

Anyways, lost track of things again!

Right, Protection Tanking! Is it wrong to not die after pulling a dozen mobs while the rest of the party is down the hall chatting and drinking up? I think I only took damage all day when I was thrown into Maraudon: Orange Crystals where the mobs were three to four levels higher than me!

There's actually more stuff to do as a Pally Tank. First you put down your Consecrate, then make sure your Holy Shield is always active and you judge as you please! Eight more levels and I can throw my shield to pull too! THIS compared to Feral Druid tanking: Mangle, Maul, Swipe, Barkskin if too much damage. However I do miss Swipe-Spam.

Perhaps I've just never felt so unkillable at a low level but its fun!

Will update more once I get to 50 and throw my shield at things randomly!

Truby the Paladin - On Tanking

Yes, the secret is out, I am in the process of making a Pally Tank!

She started out under modest circumstances, the fact that I didn't have a pally.

That was that. I left her at level 9 or so for a few months as I levelled Truny, then Turny.

Two dps at max level, then a healer at max level.

Uh oh, who to level now?

I could work on my Death Knight but....it's just so...melee!

I could work on my Rogue, he is sitting comfortably at 45 but then...Turny is dual-specced for Kitty attacks and it is actually quite strong so going back to my rogue is just like....bleh.

The mage what about the mage.? Yeah what about the mage? She got one level, is at 13 now haha! (What happened to hitting 15 a month back??)

ANYWAYS, Truby the Paladin has picked up great speed. Nevermind how DIFFICULT it is to actually start a 4/5 person group at level 30 but once you find some competent peoples its DING DING DING DING for everyone!

First stop: RFK. Plow through that shit yeah.

Scarlet Monastery: Graveyard. This is just the lure, to get people near the Monastery, because we all know we're doing the Library after and the Library is almost 50% of an exp bar at level 30!

Ding Ding. Level 31, 32. Are we high enough for Armory?

Well, one person was high enough...so we went! And cleared it no deaths or wipes! I gotta love Hand of Reckoning and Consecration! Except when the former misses.

So this isn't really a post on tanking but whatever!

Now is it just me or are there less incompetent players roaming about at the lowbie levels?

Yes I noticed that more or less everyone in the party had BOA gear all up to their hoo-ha's but in general there seems to be fewer and fewer "these people are the CORE of Fail-PUG stories" people.

Even when Turny is healing Heroic Whatevers, everyone seems to be quite good at their classes nowadays and...I am getting distressed by this!

Anyways.....lost train of thought again, BYE!

Truby the Pally!
